going to the Lilac Ball.

This is the invitation to Prep for Prep's Annual Lilac Ball, held always at the Waldorf-Astoria, and primarily to honor the graduates of the program.

And THIS is listed on the back of a lilac-colored insert (check out the 15th name down the list):
Cool, huh? My first name-printed-in-a-program!

I apologize for the unbearably bad photography, but I wanted to share this with you all! Basically the honorees, The Cashins, had the idea of inviting professionals to network with the students (I believe this is the first time they're doing this), and called the community relations and foundation departments at various companies around New York. In a funny turn of events, the head of our foundation, Jean Graham, asked me to represent Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, without knowing that I'm a Prep alum!

So, I guess I'm an "up-and-coming" executive. Terrifying.

Phu-dog, you crack me up. Thank you so much for your comment.

Prep for Prep is an organization that takes about 150 fifth-graders and puts them through "a rigorous 14-month course of study [which] spans two intensive 7-week summer sessions as well as after-school Wednesday and all-day Saturday classes during the intervening school year."

During the program, I studied things that I might have learned in the 5th and 6th grades of private school -- Latin, American history, research skills and debate, English literature -- so that when I was all finished, I was academically "ready" for the private school into which I would have been accepted. (I also learned to swim at Prep for Prep.)

It was really intense, and I hated it at times, but I really owe so much to the organization. I wouldn't have had my friends from Brearley, who are so dear, or attended Williams College and I would't have won the Williams-in-China teaching fellowship and I wouldn't have gone to Hong Kong, where I met you.

I am honored to be a part of this dinner, and in this funny capacity!

... I don't know what to write. This is... no, I don't know. It's CRAZY. Your grown-up-points are now soaring at heights I don't see myself reaching withing the next decade or so. You rule.
